Mary sits alone behind a reading desk, her blue mantle drawn into a near-perfect pyramid, one hand lifting toward us as the pages of her book stir - the only sign of the angel, who is absent. We stand where Gabriel would, and it is we who receive her grave, inward, faintly startled glance (Luke 1:26-38). Antonello strips the Annunciation of every prop - no angel, no dove, no lily, no architecture - leaving pure interior event, with geometry and shadow holding the emotion. It is among the most quietly radical pictures of the century. Leonardo's fully staged Annunciation appears elsewhere in this collection for contrast.
