A peasant hunches over his meal, spoon halfway to his mouth, and looks up sharply as if caught in the act, a dish of beans before him and bread, scallions, and a jug of wine crowding the rough table. Annibale Carracci, the great Bolognese reformer, paints ordinary life with blunt, unidealized truth - the chipped crockery, the dirty fingernails, the startled stare. Such frank realism, decades before Caravaggio's followers built careers on it, marks a turning point: the lowly and the everyday taken as worthy subjects for serious painting.
