Flight into Egypt (A. Carracci)

1604 · Oil on Canvas
Galleria Doria Pamphilj, Rome
★ 7.1 editorial score

The holy family is tiny within a calm, spacious landscape of rounded hills, a winding river, a ferry, and a castle catching the morning light, the flight into Egypt absorbed into the order of nature. Annibale Carracci composes this lunette as an ideal world, every tree and tower placed for balance and serenity. It is a founding work of classical landscape painting, the direct ancestor of Poussin and Claude, who would build careers on just this marriage of small sacred figures and a grand, harmonious, ordered countryside.
